National Geographic Education Resource

We’re taking a slight deviation from our usual reviews this week, as opposed to a creative tool, we’re reviewing National Geographic’s education resource service. This site has helped thousands of families with homeschooling during the pandemic. The pandemic's impact on children's development, and the added stress for parents cannot be ignored.

National Geographic needs no introduction, but their focus on providing quality education resources is something that is to be admired. They provide services for several age groups, and across a variety of subjects and resources, not just science and geography! They have areas ranging from Biology activities to Social Studies articles. This service is catered for the American school system, so remember that whichever grade it is covering in the States, simply add one to it.. Grade 2 = Year 3 etc. This part of the website is completely free to use and hugely interactive. It’s been several years since anyone at Content OD has been in education, so browsing the services was very informative for us! We learned many things we had forgotten, such as the devastating extent of the damage done to the Great Barrier Reef, or the water cycle of planet Earth. All types of learning are covered, from experiential learning to interactive games or deep reading - all accompanied with high quality photography and infographics.

The website requires no sign-up, is bright, vibrant, very easy to use and incredibly extensive. As well as ‘Classroom Resources’, you can apply to online courses (which come at a cost similar to other online courses out there) which they provide under ‘Professional Development’. They also run a blog which covers several ongoing topics of discussion such as climate change, black history and achievements by students. National Geographic additionally offers grants, fellowships and under ‘Student Experiences’ they offer matinees for those on both sides of education to take further steps in developing themselves and others - it really is a wonderful setup National Geographic have. I cannot recommend the site enough for those struggling to manage their time between full-time work and homeschooling their little ones! And as for all the young learners out there, this site is a wonderful gateway to nature and the world around you, and definitely something you will enjoy using. So everyone should check it out!
